So, What Is Flights Of Fancy Anyway?

Flights of Fancy, begun in 1996, is an interactive endless set of stories that have grown over the last several years to become a complete world, known as the Realm, ruled over by the Empress, Suzanne. In the Realm characters initially based on those played by Alan Rickman (in movies and on stage) take on a whole new life and interests. Only the names are taken from the Rickman character, and they are from that point their author's creation and are not intended to bear much resemblance the original character from whence they came.

Although these characters are all from different eras, all exist in one place and time, and there is a mix of the old with the new. For example, while staying at Delaford, Hans Gruber can still use his cellphone. Time is very fickle and can be bent and shaped in numerous ways, from flashbacks, to forwards, to a present time that isn't present time at all!

The storylines are sometimes written in collaboration with others (especially when everyone gets together for a party), but usually as a stand-alone stories. The story is a neverending one and follows the lives of the author's chosen characters, female characters added to keep life interesting.

Another twist is that occasionally things are seen from the perspective of actors, who under the direction of AR the 'Director', are each seemingly being filmed on the Flights of Fancy set. For there are really two types of stories- on-set, and off-set. On-set stories are stories that aren't actually happening in real life, but rather on the movie set of Flights Of Fancy, the actors being actors. Off-set stories are set in real-life, away from the camera. Some stories are only written in one of these styles- many are both.

So, How Do I Become A Member?

Writing for Flights of Fancy is for fun, and new writers are always welcomed. But before you jump in and start writing, it is a good idea to have ‘lurked’ and read for a while. Then you should follow these steps:

1- Choose a character that you wish to write about, but make SURE that it is an available one. The list of available characters are shown below. Sorry- no trading characters, or multi-writers for one character, unless it's mentioned otherwise. (For example, The Director is a shared character, and doesn't belong to one person.)

2- Email Diane at EwicIsMyIdle@aol.com about your interest in becoming a member. You don't really have to explain anything- simply name who you are, what character you want, and why you'd be a good asset to FOF.

2- Get yourself an LJ if you don't already have one. Signing up for Livejournal is easy and quick. Just go to www.livejournal.com and sign up for an account. It is recommended that you create what's called a character journal, a journal with the name of your character (like Hans_Gruber or Alexander_Dane), but this is not required.

3- Request to become a member. If you've already sent your notification email back in Step 2, then this shouldn't be a problem, and you should be added ASAP. However, because we like to keep non-FOF writers out, if we don't know who you are and you are randomly trying to join the community, you might be turned away, or else emailed for explanation of who you are. This is for security sake, and sake of keeping FOF for stories-only.

4- Become a member. Once you've been added to the community- welcome! Now get out there and start writing! You might want to do an introductory post first to say who you are, who you've claimed, and an idea of what your storyline is going to be (off-set, on-set, etc.) so the other writers have an idea of what you're going to do. But we'd be glad to have you among us fellow Rickmaniacs!

Are There Any Rules?

Not a whole lot, but here's a few basic guidelines all FOFers should obide by...

- Do not EVER write for another person's character without permisison! This means a collaboration post, or just simply stealing them for your own. Once an author has claimed a character, that character is their property to keep. If you are interested in a collaboration post, simply email the author in question and ask them about it- more likely than not, they'll say yes. We're a pretty friendly bunch. :)

- No SPAM. Please, keep it in the can, will you? All spammers of ANY sort will be immediately blocked from this community forever. No second chances, no going back. Though with our members system set up the way it is, I really doubt this would be a problem anyway.

- No irrelevant posting. Please don't post about how your grandmother's cat got stuck up in a tree. FOF is for FOF only, which means anything other than stories (or posts relating to the stories, or to FOF) shall be deleted. You will receive two warnings on irrelevant postings, but on the third, well, it's three strikes and you're out.

- No fighting or jeering or being overly rude. FOF is a friendly, fun place- please keep it so. If you don't like something on here, or something irritates you, please keep it to yourself, or just don't read it. Simple as that.

- No put-down comments. Friendly critique is one thing- your post sucks is another.

So Then Who's Available?

Here is a list of the currently claimed and available characters within our realm. Keep in mind this isn't a list of every single character Alan's ever played (though it's fairly good-sized), so if there's someone you're interested in that's not on this list, then let us know and we'll add him. Usually you're only allowed to have one character, but on a very special, rare occassion, you might be allowed to have two.
